Tragedy Fatigue

Tragic News All Around
Tragedy Fatigue is a concept that suggests repeated exposure to catastrophic events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, war, and other events where there is a loss of life, can wear down the spirit and psyche of a society. This past year or so has been especially rough on the collective psyche; Earthquakes in Haiti and Japan, threat of a nuclear meltdown in Japan, violence with the ‘Arab Spring’ revolts in the Middle East, wars in Libya, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and natural disasters such as floods and tornadoes. Thus, watching the news constantly of these tragic events can easily affect anyone – such is why, I suggest, that stories of infidelity and cheating may not be all that bad for society’s psyche. For awhile I thought that the major news networks were covering too much ‘sensationlism’ news; stories about affairs, scandals, escorts and such, but there may be some good that comes about with these stories – giving people a mental break from the tragic occurrences that happen frequently. As a society we have become to desensitized to the tragedies of the world that bring pain and death; and as humans, I hope we feel a bit of empathy and sympathy for those experiencing such pain. And in contrast, on the pain scale, an infidelity scandal is something that we can identify with, but not be as affected as violent tragedies.
So the next time you see CNN dedicating too much time on the latest celebrity cheating on their spouse, still condemn them, but maybe realize that they are giving a much needed break from reporting real problems in the world to reduce your fatigue.

Men apologizing for Men, for Women

Dear Woman
WARNING: This video contains high levels of bitchassness and pussification by some men that are apologizing for the actions of other men towards women.
This has to be either a very slick ploy for these loser men to try to score some women, or they are serious bitches. I still haven’t been able to watch the whole thing, after a few minutes, it just gets annoying.

Shaft’s Big Score – Don’t Misunderstand

Don’t Misunderstand
This is an actual real music from the Blaxploitation film Shaft’s Big Score (released 1972), this is a song that accurately captures the mood of the ‘infamous’ times of the 1970’s as pimping, gangsterism, and being a ‘playboy’ was coveted and revered. Jumping forward to the current day, I don’t think much as changed – except where this song sounds a bit more eloquent, while the current music is very blunt & direct with their slackness & slackitude.
There are some real funny and classic lines from this song. I’m still trying to figure out who the composer is; as it wasn’t mentioned in the film credits.

The BP Oil Spill – Looking back
Soon a year will pass after the devastating BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The affects were grave as people lost lives, and the environment was destroyed (water, animals, vegetation). As with most public outrage, comes creative forms of expression to ‘show what you feel’.

Powerful statements and feelings expressed through images; lets hope this tragedy is a ‘teachable moment’ for all involved – greedy corporations, corrupt governments, and unfortunately the wildlife and people affected.

You’re a F#*cking Human Being
You’re a Fucking Human Being – Joe Rogan and Daft Punk
A rant by UFC announcer, ex-Fear Factor host, comedian Joe Rogan off of his podcast; an interesting take on life, religion, politics, and such. Don’t really get why they autotuned Joe Rogan’s voice, and added Daft Punk’s ‘Around the world’, but that mix, and the visuals makes for a good 5 minutes of engaging content.
Within Range
You Fancy huh? Or Fast?
There has to exist some unwritten formula for common courtesy that states; if someone offers to buy you a meal, such meal must not be more than 100% more of what your meal costs. So if I am buying something that costs $2.75, then your max range for a similar item must be $5.25 – this is governed by the International Law of Non-Dirtbaggery and common sense. This makes sense right? I recently was a victim of this heinous offense, as someone went well out of range – especially when I didn’t even acknowledge that I would buy her meal! The nerve of some people, but as a gentleman I played it cool, and I would of covered the costs if it was in the acceptable range, but when it was upwards to 250% of my total value of my meal, that is when the line had to be drawn down in the sand. As Homey the Clown from In Living Color used to say, “Homey don’t play that”, so upon checkout, I paused and looked at her to give some money to her exuberant meal – to her dismay and embarrassment as she was fumbling for money to pay for her ‘royally’ expensive meal. And a lesson was learned, from both parties.
What should I do? Cleveland responds
Cleveland Responds to LBJ Nike Ad
Besides that the production value of this response video to Lebron James new Nike Ads is very high; which suggests that a lot of people in Cleveland are passionate about this issue, this video hits LeBron hard on several points. They call him a traitor, quitter, and pretty much label him a bitch – the moral of the story is that the city of Cleveland is very passionate about their sports.
The Recession
In a city hit hard by the recession, it is not surprising that many people find solace and/or escapism from their everyday life through sports – and what makes this particular story very hard is that LeBron grew up in Cleveland; as oppose to most sports franchise players that come from another place. Thus, the people of Cleveland felt like Lebron is ‘one of their own’, and literally, he is.
On one hand you got to feel kind of bad for the city of Cleveland – as they treated LeBron like a lover, brother, family member that betrayed them, but on the other hand, it is just ‘sports’ and sports these days are a strategic game.

All music is ‘Emo’
Joe Budden = Emo
An interesting dialogue by Joe Budden and his first-person perspective video as they talk about music being emotional – regardless of how shallow or deep your favorite artist may be, at the end of the day, all music brings an emotion. Joe Budden may bring some real life/struggle emotion, while Soulja Boy may make you feel like getting up and dance in the club – either way, it all comes down to the feelings.
Kind of a long video for the Internet finicky crowd, but you’ll learn something at the end of it. Side note: they really shouldn’t be talking so foul in front of the little kid … SMH

The Nerd Venn Diagram
Agentic State Imagery

Agentic State Imagery
Can’t Blame ’em right?
The agentic state theory suggests, wherein, as per Milgram, the essence of obedience consists in the fact that a person comes to view himself as the instrument for carrying out another person’s wishes, and he therefore no longer sees himself as responsible for his actions. Once this critical shift of viewpoint has occurred in the person, all of the essential features of obedience follow.
I have never been a big proponent on denying self accountability & responsibility for one’s actions; you know when you hear, “Its not Jimmy’s fault that he robbed the bank, his friends made him do it” – I always kind of denied those explanations, however with everything in life, their seems to be a multi-causal reason for everyone’s actions. Many constant & variable factors can influence anyone or anything – and when dealing with peer pressure and the psychology of groups & group behaviors, the Agentic state theory may play a pivotal role in explaining some behaviors.
So let’s play blame the group or the individual?
