Buy yourself a Personality: MacBook

Associative Qualities of the Mac Culture

Buy Yourself a Personality: MacBook

In my little opinion, Macbooks are not much superior to Windows and/or Linux based computing systems. The price of a Macbook can range anywhere from the $1300-$2500 and they are only optimized for their performance in memory intensive usages such as audio recording/editing and video rendering. If you are even doing Photoshop image manipulations, and you are not working with RAW files, then you do not necessarily need a MacBook. If you are reading this, and don’t even know what Final Cut, Compressor, Avid, Motion 4, Pro Tools, then you are one of those people that I like to call ‘Buying a personality’.

Cool & Trendy Factor
There is some statistic that states that out of the Personal Computing market, Apple has like less than 5% of the market share; so having a MacBook will automatically make you stand out from the pack; combine with Apple’s sleek and stylish design, people will gravitate and ask you asinine questions about your MacBook. Which essentially forces the individual to become a ‘Mac Ambassador’; someone that can give advice and their opinion about their Mac experience – and resoundingly enough it will bend toward the positive. Thus, when people become the Mac Ambassador they are embracing and becoming one with the ‘Mac Culture’; which can be defined as a free-spirited, creative, liberal, defying convention, eager individual – whom values his/her individuality from conformity (conformity being Windows culture). Those qualities will then be expressed in their clothing and swag; which is perfectly captured in the popular ‘”I’m a Mac, he’s a PC” ads.

Now, this isn’t ‘Mac resentment’ or ‘hate’; the Apple OS is a unique user experience that in my opinion is slightly better than Windows, but the cost differential is not worth it if you plan on using iMovie or iLife, or watching video on YouTube. You have to give Apple some props though, they have done a creative maeouver in giving the perception that when you buy a MacBook – which is essentially a plethora of computer parts made by other manufacturers (just like Windows machines) – you are not only being a computer, but you are buying a lifestyle. And that ‘lifestyle’ is priceless.

Defining an Era or Error: Nintendo

Nintendo

Being an “80’s baby”, the original Nintendo system was a staple in every kid’s home; I still recall the day that I got it – it was christmas, and I was up for several hours playing Super Mario Bros & Duck Hunt. I recall learning the special cheat codes for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, Super Mario 3 and other games. You have to give Nintendo some credit for popularizing the video game industry and by pushing change & innovation; not only in technology, but in popular culture. Way back in the 80’s, Atari was actually the first home video gaming system, but was vastly archaic, Nintendo introduced a system that was cheaper than the Atari, inexpensive, and had a bunch of fun & interactive games. From the 80’s to the current era, Nintendo has sustained the competition with the defunct Sega console, and even the Microsoft X-Box, and Sony Playstation. And now with the Wii, Nintendo has redefined the gaming experience and even though the X-Box and Playstation 3 has faster processors and better visual graphics, Nintendo is the leader because of the interactivity the Wii has as it immerses the video game player into the actual game. An interesting fact is that the actual company Nintendo has been around since 1889, dabling in various ‘playing game products’, such as the Nintendo Playing Card Company before launching into the video game industry in the mid 70’s with the release of Donkey Kong, and the first generation Nintendo system in the early 80’s.

Donkey Kong Arcade Video Game
Popular arcade video game introduced to North America in 1981, surprisingly to my knowledge, was also the first introduction of ‘Jumpman’ – now known as ‘Mario’

Super Mario Bros 3
Released in 1990, one of Nintendo’s most successful game ever … much better than that sh*t that was Super Mario 2, right???

Definitely Nintendo is not an error in our culture, they have become a household brand that has provided with fun & entertainment experiences that have shaped our personalities.

Buy Yourself a Personality: Motorcycle

Buy Yourself a Personality: Motorcycle

I never got what the excitement over motorcycles are; many people find thrills in ‘being one with the road’ and living dangerously as one pothole or rock can be a devastating life-ending accident. I like my life. And which is why I am not a subscriber to the motorbike craze, I am not against motorcycles completely – I recognize their value in fuel consumption, insurance, and their ability to weave through traffic. Many people are willing to fork over 10-40k for a Kawasaki, Honda, or Harley for a mode of transportation that can only be utilized certain times of the year – some people have a lot of disposable income OR are buying some personality for themselves, such as:

Rebel
– just having any kind of bike makes one look like a bad boy – someone who is a rebel against the system. This stereotype is sometimes the furthest thing from the truth as that Kawasaki rider is probably some computer analyst for a multinational corporation

Defiance
– bike riders always seem to have the perception that they defy authority; they don’t follow rules, they break them. The other defiant trait is that bikers weave through traffic and push the speed limit; if you don’t perform such a behavior then you either have gotten a very costly speeding ticket or you are just a ‘poser’ – something that a biker never wants to be seen as (even if it is true).

Gear Head
– it is assumed that any biker is a gear head/bike and car junkie; meaning, they know everything about bikes, cars, how to fix mechanical issues, and so on. Bikers will be seen almost as an authority figure on bikes, and will be asked about the new bikes on the market, questions about torque, horsepower, and other performance and maintenance issues.

Playboy
– it is automatic, one will instantly see a change in their love life. Girls that didn’t think you were hot before will suddenly have a change of heart (Mike Jones Syndrome). And of course, they will want to go for a ‘ride’, and I say give them a physical one, and a metaphorical one … you dig?

In all, one of the big things that you get from buying your personality (via the Kawasaki, Yamaha, or Honda) is the ‘cool’ factor. You will get the looks, the stares, the glares, the envy – just be careful, for some that is more lethal than heroine.

Euphemistic Styles

Subtle Punk’s

Euphemisms: The new way of insults, respectively

First, the title image probably has no real correlation with this subject (if it is, please comment), I just thought it was funny.  Now, Euphemisms are literal devices in languages; as it provides people to be genuine in the verbal manisfestations of their cognitions with regard for other’s sensitivity. In Laments terms, a euphemism is a substitution of an agreeable or less offensive expression in place of one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant to the listener. There are all kind of euphemisms from those of a sexual nature, to classism, to racism – all done subtly, and at times without one realizing what is truly being said. Some common and interesting euphemisms are:

“Enhanced Interrogation Technique”
– another term for torture

“Fertility Cente”
– an infertility centre

“Taking the Browns to the Superbowl”
– using the tooilet

“Salad Dodger”
– A more polite term for someone overweight

“Hard Gas”
– Soiling oneself.

“Richard Cranium”
– the short name for ‘richard’ + cranium (head); an insult

Defining an Era or Error: CC Jeans & L.A. Gear

CC Jeans & L.A. Gear

Defining an ERA or ERROR, a sign of the 90’s

Whether it was just a sign of an era or an error of the times, these brands defined the early 90’s for awhile.  Looking back at the lines, esepecially with Cross Color, didn’t anyone tell them to look at a basic color wheel?  A color wheel would of shown what colors do not match, but I guess that was a mute point since Cross Color had a cultural significant meaning behind it (wiki them to find out).  I would say that LRG (Lifted Research Group) is the Cross Color of today; in terms of making clothing with political and social messages – but LRG looks much better than Cross Color ever did (see comparison below).

With L.A. Gear, they were a staple when they launched the shoes that lit up; every kid and teenager wanted to have lights flash everytime they walked.  For awhile, they were giving Nike a run for their money, but the downfall of L.A. Gear may be attributed to over saturation and overall tackiness of the ‘shoes that light up’.  In the end though, L.A. Gear still survives, and even still makes some shoes that light up.  In their prime, they even had the late great Michael Jackson endorsing their shoes.

// Cross Color Jeans:
Cross Colours is a clothing brand launched in 1989 by Carl Jones. Launched on the premise of producing “clothes without prejudices” Cross Colours helped establish a fashion market based around black youth. The clothing was used to broadcast political and social messages.

// L.A. Gear

L.A. Lights: One of L.A. Gear’s most noticeable lines, which came out in early 1992. L.A. Gear began marketing shoes with red LED lights in the heels, and once a wearer’s heel hit the ground the lights would light up and continue to do so with every step. L.A. Gear went further in 1993 by introducing the L.A. Tech line of performance athletic shoes, which moved the light to the rear of the shoe and allowed it to be removed from the heel if the wearer so chose to do that. Although L.A. Gear eventually discontinued this line of shoe, many off-price brands of shoes added lights to their shoes and continue to do so to this day. (A recent line of children’s shoes made by Skechers also featured lights in the shoes).

Authority Figures and the Social Media World

Authority and the Social Media World

It may have been said best by Bertrand de Jouvenel:
“The phenomenon called authority is at once more ancient and more fundamental than the phenomenon called state; the natural ascendancy of some men over others is the principle of all human organizations and all human advances.”

All societies operate on the concept of authority; as some figure or body of government has the ability and power deliver punishment on individual(s). Since the Roman civilization, authority is used as a deterrence and an instrument of justice; punishing those that break the laws of a society. In contemporary society as it relates to the rule of law, an authority figure would be law enforcement, military, intelligence services – and as we have seen in certain countries, the use of power in punishing others can be very relenting, and even the legitimacy in the authority figures and its ideology can be questioned and revolted by a society (i.e. Iran). However, without a body to enforce the rules and order of a society, then chaos is sure to arise as man can not govern itself freely. There are several differing types of authority according to German Max Weber, they are Rational-legal, traditional, and charismatic.

Social Media Urban Context

“Modern societies depend on legal-rational authority. Government officials are the best example of this form of authority, which is prevalent all over the world.”, however this type of authority is not respected much by the growing industry of ‘Social Media’, as governments find it increasingly difficult to regulate the Internet – the most prime example is the government in Iran who have failed to block certain social media sites; as the people in that country have used technology, specifically the use of IP Proxies, to get around the government crackdown. In Western countries, governments try to establish rules and laws, however much of the enforcement is scattered and not effective as there are many socially unacceptable sites dealing with underage exploits.

“Traditional authority, which derives from long-established customs, habits and social structures. When power passes from one generation to another, then it is known as traditional authority”, as it relates to social media, this is a toss-up: on the one hand it seems that the Internet community on a whole has some group personality traits; groups will isolate those that don’t fit their site ideology, and sometimes delivering disparaging comments will make one very popular. So it can be said that the customs that we develop in the tangible world are being transferred to online interactions. However, the argument can be made that the sense of anonymity and impersonal nature of what the Internet provides, has created a crude and rude culture – that has always existed in the physical world, but the Internet has exacerbated such attitudes into behaviors.

“Charismatic authority is that authority which is derived from “the gift of grace” or when the leader claims that his authority is derived from a “higher power” (e.g. God or natural law or rights) or “inspiration”, that is superior to both the validity of traditional and rational-legal authority and followers accept this and are willing to follow this higher or inspired authority, in the place of the authority that they have hitherto been following. Some of the most prominent examples of charismatic authority can be politicians or leaders, who come from a movie or entertainment background”, couldn’t have been said any better. In this social media realm, many are titled an ‘authority figure’ just on their ‘swag’, their ‘charisma’. This is a falsity, and should be corrected as many people are being handed the magic wand of ‘authority’ when they have no real power other than their popularity – which in some cases can be very powerful in influencing masses. However, they can not really ‘punish’ people other through isolating other people – which can be just as damaging psychologically as a physical blow can be.

The follow-up to this will be a highlight of such ‘authority figures’ … hopefully it will teach us whom has the real power, and whom is just faking it!

Unconfirmed Sources Confirmed

Verifying the Unverified Reports for Confirmation

The role of sources in a lightning fast news environment

With the whole aftermath of the passing of the King of Music (no, not ‘King of Pop’, King of Music mofo’s), on June 25, 2009, there will sure be a debate on the issue of ‘unconfirmed’ and ‘confirmed’ reports/sources. Like everyone, I started to receive txt msgs, Blackberry messages, tweets about Michael Jackson being hospitalized; so immediately I wanted validation, my first instinct was to tune to CNN. At CNN they had confirmed that he was hospitalized, in parallel, TMZ was reporting he had already passed via their ‘unconfirmed report’. The BBC, CBC, all rushed to change graphics to that he was ‘dead’, and they cited ‘unconfirmed reports’. However, CNN didn’t follow suit; they did mention the ‘unconfirmed report’, but they always followed up with “CNN has not confirmed”. At this time, BET was already dedicating 106 & Park to MJ, Fox News was saying he passed; all based on an ‘unconfirmed report’; now allegedly not from TMZ, but from the L.A. Times (where their site went down due to traffic).

Unconfirmed vs Confirmed

I deduce that an ‘unconfirmed report’ is little more than ‘hearsay’ or ‘gossip’; originating from someone that is not an ‘official’ or ‘professional’, or has not been validated by secondary and/or external sources. As like many, I was flipping news sources to see any variations and/or similarities in the coverage, then something happened that cemented why CNN can really stand by the moniker ‘The Most Trusted Name in News’, CNN’s I-hate-immigrant-workers Lou Dobbs personality chick had a live interview with the L.A. Coroner’s office that gave the official statement – confirming the ‘unconfirmed’. Of course, as we have all found out, the ‘unconfirmed report’ was accurate
This is important in an ultra fast paced news dimension of tweets, internet, and cable news where information travels lightning quick; one’s sources are paramount in lending validity. I am sure CNN felt mounting pressure to follow their cable news network peers, but doing so would of undermine their journalistic integrity – as I am sure for many news networks and websites, the goal was to get the information first versus getting the information that was correct & confirmed. I have a new respect for CNN as they have help protect the journalism community, as with life as it is with journalism, “A man is nothing without his word”, exchange the obvious with ‘news organization’ and ‘sources’.

Michael Jackson Abstract fan art

R.I.P. Michael Jackson

R.I.P. the King of Pop Michael Jackson (1958-2008), a lot of my current musical tastes, and even my moves in the clubs (when I get down) are heavily influenced by Michael. Some of the most key songs that I play when I hit those emotional states will be a MJ song; and listening to them this morning, I realized that how masterful those songs are – the Off the Wall album is very timeless as those songs don’t really sound old.  Everything from the vocal arrangements, the percussions, production, and to LYRICAL CONTENT, MJ was way ahead of his time – and today’s striving musician should take some music history lessons … its not hard, just listen to that album and you will be a better artist.

Looking out at today’s average R&B/pop/hip-hop artist, it is clearly evident that Michael influenced them all. It is sad though to see the many flashbacks of Michael from childhood to adulthood; as a change is evident, and the ‘machine’ behind him & his rising popularity to iconic status – influenced him very muchso. He never really had a childhood; which as an adult, he grossly overcompensated – but with all the allegations and such, I truly don’t believe he did what was alleged, his heart and intentions were always in the right place – just by current social standards, his actions raised eyebrows.

So f— the haters, this weekend celebrate his life, his memories, and his message of world peace, and let the celebration continue forever.  So here is some great abstract fan art:

A bit more about Michael and his accomplishments from Wikipedia:
In the early 1980s, he became a dominant figure in popular music and the first African-American entertainer to amass a strong crossover following on MTV. The popularity of his music videos airing on MTV, such as “Beat It”, “Billie Jean” and Thriller—credited for transforming the music video into an art form and a promotional tool—helped bring the relatively new channel to fame. Videos such as “Black or White” and “Scream” made Jackson an enduring staple on MTV in the 1990s. With stage performances and music videos, Jackson popularized a number of physically complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk. His distinctive musical sound and vocal style influenced many hip hop, pop and contemporary R&B artists.

Sales of over 750 million records worldwide, making him the world’s best selling male solo pop artist.

Thriller sold over U.S. 28 million copies

FreeStyle – The Avant Garde Way

Coltrane’s Freestyle

Breaking conventions of the day – a blueprint for hip-hop

Though the music produced by free jazz pioneers varied widely, the common feature was a dissatisfaction with the limitations of bebop, hard bop, and modal jazz, which had developed in the 1940s and ’50s. Each in their own way, free jazz musicians attempted to alter, extend, or break down the conventions of jazz, often by discarding hitherto invariable features of jazz, such as fixed chord changes or tempos. While usually considered experimental and avant-garde, free jazz has also oppositely been conceived as an attempt to return jazz to its “primitive,” often religious roots, and emphasis on collective improvisation.

Free jazz is most strongly associated with the ’50s innovations of Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor and the later works of saxophonist John Coltrane. Other important pioneers included Eric Dolphy, Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, Bill Dixon, and Sun Ra.

Starting in bebop and hard bop, Coltrane later pioneered free jazz. He influenced generations of other musicians, and remains one of the most significant tenor saxophonists in jazz history. He was astonishingly prolific: he made about fifty recordings as a leader in his twelve-year-long recording career, and appeared as a sideman on many other albums, notably with trumpeter Miles Davis.

Here are some classic compositions from Coltrane and Davis:

I say all this to state that hip-hop is in a similar state that jazz was in; and hip-hop is in dire need of something to break it from the current dismal convention – luckily, we have a few artists that are defying limits like Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, but we need more or I fear that my little baby nephew will think that stringing a bunch of similies together and shouting on the track is ‘hip-hop’ …. (I shudder the thought).
