Kobe Bryant Fan Art

Kobe Bryant Fan Art

Love him or hate him, he gets it in

Love him or hate him, Kobe Bryant seems to be that dude that can reach in his bag of tricks and pull out something amazing.  Anyone one with thousands of sites and blogs dedicated to his demise must be doing something right, right?  This L.A. Laker perennial All-Star pulled off a ridiculous shot last week against Duane Wade (clip below), so I figured that you gotta give a player his due when he gets it in – and season after season, Kobe Bryant has lifted the NBA out of the ‘Jordan-less’ era, and I am sure that David Stern isn’t complaining with the revenue the league is bringing in.

So here is some Kobe Bryant fan art that shows off his athleticism and that smile that is warming to some on the West Coast, but is hated by most.

Nu American Gothic

American Gothic

A little something to expand your art horizons and to coincide with the ‘Halloween theme’, as per Wikipedia, American Gothic is a painting by Grant Wood from 1930. Its inspiration came from a cottage designed in the Gothic Revival style with a distinctive upper window and a decision to paint the house along with “the kind of people I fancied should live in that house.”  The painting shows a farmer standing beside a woman whose identity remains ambiguous; she may either be his spinster daughter, as explained by the artist’s sister, or the farmer’s wife. The figures were modeled by the artist’s dentist and sister. The woman is dressed in a colonial print apron mimicking 19th century Americana and the couple are in the traditional roles of men and women, the man’s pitchfork symbolizing hard labor, and the flowers over the woman’s right shoulder suggesting domesticity.

It is one of the most familiar images in 20th century American art and one of the most parodied artworks within American popular

Marge Simpson Playboy Cover

Beyond 2D Imagination

Playboy’s smartest move

Marge Simpson will be on the cover for the November 2009 issue for the iconic magazine Playboy. One way to generate interest into a dying medium & publication is to blur the lines of reality – so kudos to Playboy for accomplishing buzz and pushing the imagination of many to actually contemplate what is under that green dress (insert joke here). This issue can spawn Playboy’s competitors to think of other crazy issues, such as Cartman’s mother from South Park in Hustler, or even Lois from the Family Guy — the sky is the limit.

Here are also some other interesting derivations of the iconic cartoon mother

The DJ

The DJ

Evolution of the DJ: the Playlist DJ

Wikipedia says

“a disc jockey (also known as disk jockey, DJ or deejay) is a person who selects and plays recorded music for an audience. Originally, disk referred to phonograph records, while disc referred to the Compact Disc, and has become the more common spelling. Today, the term includes all forms of music playback, no matter the source”

DJ’s today are not like the one’s we grew up to via real life and media; with programs like Virtual DJ, a heavy mp3 library, and a Macbook, anybody can create a playlist from home, setup the cues, and the program will automatically blend and match BPM’s. The hip-hop purists (the hip-hop snobs) frown down upon this new breed of the DJ, but the partygoer doesn’t really care – as their main concern is getting in that last drink before the bar stops serving liquor.

Now, on to the DJ Art …

Whatever type of DJ you may be, just keep one thing in mind – move the crowd.  Don’t play for the minority, play for the majority.

Jay-Z Fan Art

Jay-Z Fan Art

I guess Jay is at a level where he can get a dedicated post of abstract art designed by his fans. The Blueprint 3 continues to do extremely well even in this rocky economic climate — but I guess good music, is good music. And it is something that the game has been missing for awhile. Which goes to show you that hip-hop is not dead, the recording industry is only in as much trouble as the garbage albums that its members put out.

Like that movie the ‘field of dreams’ or something, ‘build it, and they will come’ – guess that is why Jay-Z made the Blueprint; and had to make 3 editions for the game.

The Making of Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Artwork
I thought it was photoshopped, but apparently the cover was designed by something called ‘humans’ who specialize in something called ‘art’.

Visually Fall

Visually Fall

The majestic transitional season

Autumn (also known as Fall in North American English) is one of the four temperate seasons. Autumn marks the transition from summer into winter, usually in late March (southern hemisphere) or late September (northern hemisphere) when the arrival of night becomes noticeably earlier. Personally, I dig the fall because of the change in temperature; moving away from the extreme summer – but I don’t like the move towards the extreme cold (especially up here). Anyhow, here are some visual stimuli for your retina:

8-bit Art

8-Bit Art

Some creative artistic renditions from classic Nintendo and Atari titles such as Zelda, Super Mario, and Donkey Kong.  I don’t know about you, but I am feeling the simplistic style of the 8-bit art with all of its pixelations and clumpy colors. I should note now that the inspiration from this post comes from a discussion with ‘Mr. P’ and his ramblings about ‘Grilled Cheese’ … more about that on a next note.

Summer, suspended with Stills

Summer, suspended with Stills

A thousand stories told in every picture

“According to meteorologists, summer extends for the whole months of June, July and August in the northern hemisphere and the whole months of December, January and February in the southern hemisphere”

I’m not really a big fan of summer; I don’t like the ‘extreme seasons’ (summer and winter), I prefer the transitional seasons (spring and fall) – which realisitcally suggests that there are only two real seasons, but the marketing departments of your favorite fashion designer or store will never have that. Summer is very hot, humid, and smelly; like others who live in dense cities, summer is a time when the air quality is very poor and sometimes it is hard to breathe with the humid heavy air circulating around. However summer is a time to ‘lime’, ‘relax’, ‘chill’, and enjoy the outdoors … which have been captured in these stunning visual works:
